The City of Amsterdam has seen many changes over its lifetime. Since becoming a city in 1865, the city saw exponential population growth in its first decades, fueled by jobs offered by the booming carpet mills. However when the carpet mills picked up and moved south, the city was left with many large abandoned buildings and properties that still stand in various states of disrepair today.
Recent revitalization efforts have focused on developing the waterfront and downtown areas of the city. Riverlink Park, located on the north bank of the Mohawk River, hosts live music concerts during the summer months. The Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook pedestrian bridge provides a connection between the park and the city’s south side. The city also hosts regular events and festivals throughout the year which routinely draw large numbers of visitors.
In 2018, the city was awarded a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant from New York State, and plans are currently in the works to use the funds for a variety of projects to attract visitors and improve the aesthetics of the city’s downtown area.
While the city continues to face economic challenges, many in the city see the potential for a “renaissance” on the horizon. At Freedom Church, we believe in praying for and supporting the efforts to improve the quality of life of Amsterdam, NY. We take to heart the same spirit that Jeremiah encouraged the Israelites to have and “seek the peace of the city…pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”
